In Club Native, Deer looks deeply into the history and present-day reality of Aboriginal identity. With moving stories from a range of characters from her Kahnawake Reserve – characters on both sides of the critical blood-quantum line – she reveals the divisive legacy of more than a hundred years of discriminatory and sexist government policy and reveals the lingering “blood quantum” ideals, snobby attitudes and outright racism that threaten to destroy the fabric of her community. Tracey Deer will present her film and be available for discussion/questions after.

Speaker: From Montreal’s Missing Justice Campaign

Missing Justice is a grassroots solidarity collective based in Montreal that works to eliminate violence and discrimination against Indigenous women living in Quebec. Our goals are to raise public awareness and create a safer environment for Indigenous women by tackling issues of systemic racism, sexism, classism and negligence that are present in the media, the justice system and police forces. We recognize that the causes of racialized and sexualized violence are linked to Canada’s colonial policies of the past and present.

This workshop is designed specifically for sociology and anthropology students to know how to use the library tools in their research.

SASU believes that this workshop will help students to navigate more efficiently in their research and to be better students. I highly recommend it.

Please keep in mind that Concordia University cautions us all that misrepresenting one’s medical condition is a serious offense under the Academic Code of Conduct.

1. The first assignment is still due on the same date, except that instead of three weeks you will now only have two, and the question will be simplified somewhat. The intention was that each of the take home essay exams would be completed in two weeks, but in the first case this would have meant returning papers on Oct. 12, which is a holiday.
2. The second assignment will be assigned a week later, and due a week later than originally planned.
3. The material for what was originally intended to be the final class, has instead been deleted.

Please note that for the first essay exam, only the lectures and reading materials for sessions 2 and 3 will be covered — that is, the materials for Sept. 21 and Oct. 5.
